Dr. Kristen Engle, a solo trauma surgeon with Eden Medical Center in Alameda County, has contracted with HRA Medical Management since 2002 to do her complex trauma billing and assist with her coding. Managing eight shifts per month, Dr. Engle likes working with HRA because, “Trauma patients have multiple diagnoses and it would take me forever to sort through all the CPT codes. I don't have time to do all the coding, so they've been a big help in assisting me and have also helped me do a better job of documentation.”
Because of the multiple diagnoses, the average trauma patient's bill is much higher than the average ER patient's. Her average bill is approximately $2,500 - $3,000. She also deals with a large number of uninsured patients. Having no contracts with individual insurance companies, Dr. Engle bills fee for service.
Dr. Engle also appreciates the ease and flexibility of working with HRA. “I have confidence in HRA. I'm very meticulous about my documentation. I bill conservatively and legitimately and they listen to how I want to bill and take that into account.”
In addition, working with HRA has allowed her to focus on her practice instead of having to set up an office and worry about all the HIPAA rules, etc. “I don't have to keep charts. They keep charts for me and it keeps me from having an office. I just drop-ship my charts to them every week or two and it's been very easy to do.”
