Hospitalist Services

HRA Medical Management has been providing excellence in Hospitalist billing for more than 12 years. During that time we have noticed that Hospitalists are excellent physicians who do an exceptional job of providing the best patient care while optimizing cost-savings for their group or hospital. However, we have also noticed that often they are not asking themselves the question “Are we optimizing our reimbursement while at the same time ensuring that our documentation meets all compliance standards?” With HRA as your outsourced billing partner our goal is to ensure that two basic things occur:

The Hospitalist physicians are getting paid honestly, fully and timely for all the excellent services that they provide.
The Hospitalists are protected from future insurance company or government (OIG) audits that threaten their income.

With that in mind HRA uses “state of the art” billing and collection practices and supplies outstanding IT reports and analysis. Our focus is to maximize your collections and minimize the time it takes to collect it. We find, in general, that Hospitalists are very good at applying correct diagnosis and procedure coding for their services. What is often lacking is compliant documentation that supports their code choices.

HRA specializes in Physician Education and Compliance as well as excellence in billing and collections. We provide in-service training on a yearly or as-needed basis for Hospitalists. We monitor and internally audit the practice to recognize problems, quickly correct them and optimize reimbursement and documentation compliance. We work with individual physicians and provide documentation help and analysis when necessary (i.e., critical care documentation). Kristy Welker, CPC, our Coding and Education Manager, is well recognized as an expert in these areas, and writes a bi-monthly article on Hospitalist coding for Today’s Hospitalist Magazine.

Joel Baranski, M.D.
Southern California Hospitalist

Dr. Joel Baranski has a group of 13 Hospitalists that handle unassigned, internal medicine patients for a San Diego hospital. They also serve as the primary internal medicine attending physicians and do a lot of teaching for residents. Baranski and his group have entrusted their billing and other accounting services with HRA for the past seven years.

“HRA is not only able to handle a large number of cases, but they are also able to help with our problematic patients, i.e., those with little or no insurance. HRA is very good at following through on these unfunded patients by submitting to a variety of sources to help us get reimbursed. Anybody can bill Medicare, but compared with other billing companies I've worked with, HRA is much more thorough, following up on funds for the problem patients,” Dr. Baranski commented.

“We are a fairly busy hospitalist group, admitting approximately 10-12 patients per day, which equates to about 3500 hospital visits per year,” Dr. Baranski stated.

In addition to billing for Dr. Baranski's group, HRA also provides other special services such as accounting and payroll. Dr. Baranski feels HRA is very knowledgeable about the different types of insurance and funding sources to assist with a variety of patients. He said that HRA is also very resourceful when it comes to handling those uninsured and other "problem" patients, optimizing reimbursement for the Hospitalist group and continuously following up to make sure the physicians get paid for all cases.
